We recently took a wonderful trip to Thailand with our friends from Saudi, the Feimster's. The trip planning started back in June with bookings actually happening in November. We went for basically 10 days but I truly feel like it was two separate trips. The first half of our time in Thailand was spent on the beautiful island of Ko Phi Phi at a secluded resort. I'll start at the beginning.
Living in Doha has some perks, as in cutting out one extra leg of travel to get places. Unfortunately, Dan and Heather's journey started earlier than ours in order for them to get from Saudi to Doha. But eventually we all met up in the Doha airport and began our journey together. Our first flight ended up delayed. Then after running through the Bangkok airport, our second flight was delayed. Sadly, this second flight delay ended up screwing up our boat schedule to get to our resort. So instead of getting to our boat at 11:30 and our resort by 1pm we had to wait around until 4pm for the next boat. Bummer! But as usual, we made the best of it and found a marina to have lunch and a couple drinks to pass the time.
After our delay, we finally boarded our boat to take us to the resort. Our resort was very beautiful with a wonderful beach. All the bungalows were tucked into the trees along the shoreline.
Originally we thought that the dive company on the resort went out twice a day which would give both couples a chance to go diving each day. However, this was not the case and they only went out once a day. So we decided that Micah and I would go out the first day, Dan and Heather the second day, and Micah and Dan the last day. This meant that Heather and I only went once but we made up for it with spa treatments :) Diving here was pretty good. The visibility wasn't fabulous but we were able to see lots of neat creatures including ghost pipefish, turtle, lobsters, a huge jellyfish, blue speckled ray, stonefish, eels, and small white eels. Our boat to get out to the dive sites was kinda slow but I enjoyed the time baby free and just hanging out on the boat with Micah plus the beautiful scenery.
For our surface interval and lunch the boat took us into the Maya bay area and close to Maya beach. Maya beach has become very popular after the filming of the Leonardo Dicaprio movie "The Beach". We didn't actually go onto the beach which if you notice all the boats parked on the beach, I wasn't too sad about. But we did get a glimpse of the beach and were able to do some swimming and of course, jumping off the boat.
The rest of our days at the resort were filled with lots of beach and pool play time. Jacob and Luke had a blast playing together and copying each other. It was so fun to watch them explore together. The tides on our beach were huge making some points in the day very shallow which ended up being perfect play time for the boys. They were able to run freely without us having to worry about them falling in over their heads. For this age, I LOVE this type of beach. Our typical morning was spent on the beach followed by the pool bar restaurant for lunch, maybe a little playing afterwards and then a nap. We even had them nap in the strollers so that we could enjoy peace time on the beach. The boys were so worn out from all the playing that this was no problem!
We spent some of our time at the pool as well. The pool had a little slide that the boys loved. At first we would always go down the slide with them but then we decided to let them try it out on their own. They LOVED it! We started having one or two adults at the bottom to catch while the other two were at the top putting them on the slide. Jacob of course want to walk up the hill to the slide by himself.
While on the resort, we decided to take advantage of the resort babysitters. One night we decided to have a nice dinner together at one of the restaurants on the resort. It wasn't our favorite place to eat but it was nice to be away together with no babies to tend to.
A couple of times we wandered into Phi Phi village and found this fabulous restaurant called Pad Thai. I think we were all in love with this place. It had fabulous food and a fun environment. One night our boys ended up playing chase with a little Thai girl. The town itself was very small but with a fun atmosphere. There was hardly anyone in the bars and shops and we wondered if it ever gets busy. Jacob enjoyed swinging in one of the hammocks!
Our last half day at our resort we decided to do a hike to a view point of Lonsai bay. Heather was having some issues with sand flea bites and needed to go to the resort nurse so we went without her. It was a little more intense of a hike than I think we bargained for but it was still fun. We think the view point at some point in time must have been better with the brush cut back but it was kinda difficult to figure out where was the actual view point. However, it was still fun!
After the hike, we all got cleaned up and it was time to say goodbye to Phi Phi. We were sad to leave but excited about the second half of our vacation: Phuket. Before we left we took a few pictures of the resort:
